UFA 1933/1934 FILM ANNOUNCEMENT BOX SET (incl. HJ QUEX, FLÜCHTLINGE, and 25 other films)

UƒA FILM STUDIO 1933/1934 PRODUCTIONS PRESENTATION BOX SET

(incl. HJ QUEX, FLÜCHTLINGE, and 25 other films)

We offer here the extremely rare original German Uƒa film studio Presentation Box, sent only to cinema owners, to announce and promote the forthcoming 1933 – 1934 movie season. The box contains 31 individual booklets –– 27 feature film booklets are each 8 pages in length; as well as four 4 page booklets. The four page booklets include one which announces the overall 1933/1934 season with all film titles listed;  as well as a message from the Uƒa management; and the other three shorter booklets are devoted to Short Films, Cultural Films, and the Uƒa Wochenschau newsreels, respectively. Each of the 31 booklets is 8 inches by 6.5 inches large (approximately 20.5 cm x 17 cm.)

(Heretofore the annual Uƒa annual announcements were either softbound or hardbound books, with two or three pages devoted to each film. This included the film title, the actors, director, and synopsis. Graphic art depicting a scene from the film, or in some cases, the art that later adorned the actual film poster, was also shown. This 1933/1934 box set design is unique and different to all the other film studio’s preview season publications which ran from 1920/1921 in the Weimar years through to the final one published in late 1939. Individual film booklets were never used again.)

In the first booklet all 27 feature films are listed by title. An 8 page booklet devoted to each film is included in the set. This box is complete with nothing missing.  The metal snap which closes the box also snaps shut.

Important propaganda films amongst the 27 film booklets included are Hans Steinhoff’s Hitlerjunge Quex, Gustav Ucicky’s Flüchtlinge (Refugees), Wolfgang Liebeneiner’s Rivalen der Luft (Rivals in the Air), the "Blood and Soil" film Blut und Boden (also titled Du sollst nicht begehren/You shall not covet), Die Himmelflöte (Air Fleet), Carl Froelich's Volldampf Voraus! (Full Speed Ahead!) ; a yet untitled Espionage Film listing Leni Riefenstahl as the star ––the film was never produced! Also a yet unnamed Arnold Fanck Film (famous for his “mountain pictures:”) Of the non–propaganda films, there are many well–known ones today, such as Victor und Victoria by Reinhold Schünzel, and Karl Hartl’s Gold, starring Hans Albers, which is the only Science Fiction Film produced during the Third Reich that was released for public viewing.

Please note that these booklets are the FIRST PUBLICATIONS about each of these films ever.  Imagine owning the first–ever publication on Hitlerjunge Quex!

This set is also important historically because it was the first Uƒa studio publication which addressed its relationship with the new Hitler regime.

In 1933, the Uƒa studio was doing its best to accommodate the Minister for Propaganda, Dr. Joseph Goebbels, who was by default the “Minister for Film.”

In the introductory booklet listing all 27 feature the message from the film studio’s senior management states:

In confident trust in the government of the Reich, with such an outstanding, success–initiated, economic lift of the German people, by providing extraordinary artistic, financial and technical resources,  [this] has enabled us at Ufa to offer our esteemed clientele the 1933/34 film distribution program of 27 feature, cultural and short films.
