Sieg im Westen (Mjölnir)

Hans Schweitzer (25 July 1901 – 1980), known as Mjölnir, was a graphic artist who produced many posters for the Nazi Party under Adolf Hitler. He draw hundreds of Nazi images  --- for the NSDAP election poster campaigns in the 1920s/1930s, he created a number of famous posters (such as stark black and white photo NUR HITLER! from 1932) which are often reproduced in propaganda books today....through to Hitler's assumption of power, then for various Party organizations, as well as book dust-jackets (such as for Goebbels' book "Der Angriff"), pamphlets (such as that for Goebbels' "Total War" speech of 1943), handbills, and during the war those with military themes,  including the late 1944/early 1945 posters for the Volkssturm (as shown below.....)

Mjölnir created only two film posters, and the Collection has both of the originals -- the infamous Der Ewige Jude sickly yellow Jewish head poster, as well as his Gaufilmstelle poster for the Wehrmacht documentary film Sieg im Westen, shown here.  This is the only known original of this poster, which is reproduced here for the first time, and is not found in any other post-1945 poster or propaganda poster reference book.

Here are two samples of his non-film propaganda posters for the NSDAP which are not in our Collection):

Sieg im Westen  was shown in German cinemas in the neutral USA in the summer of 1941, including the 96th Street Theatre in Manhattan, in the German-speaking Yorkville neighbourhood.Anti-Nazi pickets chose the 96th Street Theatre as their favorite target. The largest demonstration came in May, 1941, when the 96th Street presented "Sieg im Westen" ("Victory in the West"), a documentary feature depicting Nazi Germany’s conquests of Holland, Belgium and France, as well as defeats and captures of British troops. Pickets from the German-American Congress for Democracy and the Non-Sectarian Anti-Nazi League paced the sidewalk in front of the entrance, waving placards such as "Down With All Dictators" and "Going to Nazi Theatres Helps to Undermine the American Defense System."  A photo from our library shows this picketing:

The 96th Street Theatre also features in background information on this website for the films Blutendes Deutschland and SA Mann Brand
