Verräter (Verraeter) (Peter Pewas)

This is the Bulgarian poster for the film.

We do not own an original German poster for this film designed by Peter Pewas. The Pewas graphic art was renowned in Germany through its use of photo montage and painted images, and modernistic type fonts and overlays, reminiscent of poster art from the Soviet Union. In some ways, it is surprising that such poster art was approved for distribution in the Third Reich at all.

The Pewas graphic art for this film's poster was reproduced in full–colour on the cover of the cinema owners' guide (Werberatschlag), which we do have in our Collection, show here:

The poster is  37 inches high x 25 nches wide, 95cm high x 63cm wide, printed, and has been mounted on cardboard stock. Two holes at the top of the board allowed it to be hung on display at the time it was used.

Note the original "postage stamp" from the Bulgarian authorities is still attached, indicating that the censorship fee for this poster was paid and therefore approved for public use.  The censorship tax stamp was applied to each poster publicly displayed in Bulgaria at the time. This was a matter of censorship/control, as well as a source of revenue. Any posters displayed without such a stamp were illegal, were removed, and the publisher/source of such posters prosecuted. Such censorship stamps are evident on posters from a number of pre-1945 countries, such as Belgium, Bulgaria, Italy, and Hungary, in our Collection.
