Wasser für Canitoga

Herbert Selpin, the film's director, committed suicide in prison the evening before being charged with the offence of slandering the Armed Forces and sabotaging war morale, in August 1942, during his work on the Ufa film TITANIC.

This wartime poster for the 1939 Hans Albers hit, WASSER FÜR CANITOGA, was printed in Belgium and after Selpin's death and his being 'persona non grata' in the Third Reich, his name as Director of this film was over–printed with a black stripe, to be seen here. His given name, Herbert, being covered by the black ink, and his family name Selpin covered as well by the carefully-placed censorship stamp affixed to all publicity approved by the regime.

The Collection has 2 TRENCK DER PANDUR posters with similar inked–out Selpin credits. The 2 German TITANIC poters were printed after his death so his name does not appear on them in the first place.
