JUD SÜSS - Exhibition Catalogue from the famous Stuttgart exhibition held in 2007|2008.

This 151 page exhibition catalogue was sold during the Stuttgart Haus der Geschichte's outstanding "JUD SÜSS --Propagandafilm im NS Staat" installation. The exhibition was meant to run from December 14, 2007 until the end of June 2008, but the enormous popularity by visitors over those months prompted the Musuem to extend the exhibition until August 3rd that year.

There are a number of post-war German language books on the story of Jud Süss Oppenheimer and the Veit Harlan propaganda fllm, but this catalogue brings together expertly researched chapters, accompanied by hundreds of illustrations, to present this historical saga like no other publication.

The tragic story of Jud Süss took place in Württemberg of which the capital was Stuttgart. The original trial documents from 1738 were on display under glass, and all the film studio correspondence, two  versions of the film script, set design graphic art, artist photos, 60 original lobby cards, and original film posters from across Europe in 1940/41; as well as books, cinema pamphlets, anti–Semitic propaganda, and court records from the post-war trials of the film director, Veit Harlan, who was charged with "crimes against humanity" for making the motion picture.  All of this material is illustrated, often in colour, in this magnificent catalogue.

The catalogue sold out and is no longer in print. We had on loan for the exhibition two original posters and other rare ephemera from the film so were able to acquire a handful of the catalogue during this time. Also included is the also out-of-print facsimile translation and the original German document written by the film's director, Veit Harlan in April/May 1945 when his world was collapsing in the ruins of the Third Reich.

In this document, Harlan tries to justify why he produced and directed JUD SÜSS  under pressure from Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels, and also discusses other propaganda flms he made such as THE GREAT KING and  KOLBERG. This is a first-hand primary statement from the #1 film director of the Third Reich, published for the first time in both English and German. Only 60 copies of this mimeographed treatise were printed in May 1945, most have been lost to history, and this copy comes from The William Gillespie Collection.
