Venus vor Gericht

Venus vor Gericht  is a anti-modern art film with a young Nazi Party sculptor fighting the Weimar era "degenerate art" movement and its Jewish dealers.  The film synopsis:

Venus vor GerichtIllustrierte Film-Kurier  translation

It took place in the last year of the Weimar era. Peter Brake, a talented young sculptor, who does not want to bow to the powers that dominate the arts, comes up with the idea of creating and burying a statute based on the model of classical masterpieces.  At some point, he wants to play a trick on the art masters by finding the torso. Without his intervention and earlier than expected, his work is unearthed back into the light of day.

The discovery is a sensation. An enterprising art dealer brings about an expert judgement that describes the figure as a real masterpiece of antiquity. The state government is persuaded to buy the 'Venus from the field' for an enormous price.

When Peter Brake claims to be the creator of the highly prized statue, all the forces of the system unite against him. The state and the experts fear an embarrassment, the art dealer that business is as good as it is unclean. The affair has a political aftertaste when the uncomfortable young man's affiliation with the National Socialist Party becomes known.

A perjury procedure is being initiated. He has vowed to be the creator of the statue and cannot prove it. The confession of a courageous woman, who has stood as a model for him as a girl, saves him from a certain prison sentence. Her advocacy for the accused destroys the marriage with a man whose character is not up to the contentious events. Her place in life in the future is by Peter Brake's side.
