Pedro Soll Hängen

In his April 1945 testament, written as the Third Reich collapsed around him, Veit Harlan said of Pedro Soll Hängen:

"My film Pedro Soll Hängen  was an attempt to make a religious comedy about simple folk who weren't prepared for the concept of immortality. This daring effort was, I think, successful because my own religiousity steered me in the right way. Goebbels screamed at me expressions such as 'literary nonsense' and 'intellectual rubbish;' 'hidden church propaganda' and had 800 metres cut out of a 2300 metre long film, after I declared myself unable to do as he wished. All religious dialogue was then cut so that the headless torso remained from which I withdrew my name. At that time such a thing was still possible to do – later on I didn't have that freedom any more."

----Veit Harlan, Where I stood on National Socialism, May 1945, avaialble from IHF Films, Chicago.

Here is the very rare Böhmen und Mähren (former Czechoslovakia) poster from 1941, with Harlan's name still prompted as the film's director.
